Name compatibility
A syllable, a rashi and a name number. Tradition, not a promise.
Tell us the child's nakshatra if you know it, or the birth date and time, and any name. The name can be one we already list, or a spelling you type. For a new spelling, confirm the Devanagari first sound so the syllable match is the sound you mean, not a guess we locked in.
You will see three notes. The syllable is exact, close, or no match with the nakshatra pada. The rashi either agrees with that pada or it does not. The number compares the Chaldean total of the English spelling with the birth number, which is only the day of the month. Pythagorean is mentioned as the other common count and is not the one used for the overall line. The overall line is Traditional match, Partial match, or not a traditional match. A family can still love a name that is not a traditional match. Birth details stay on this phone.
How a name is matched to a nakshatra
Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has a traditional starting syllable, set out in the Avakahada chakra. Rohini's padas, for example, begin with O, Va, Vi and Vu. A name is read as suiting a nakshatra when its first syllable matches one of these sounds.
The rashi follows from the pada, so the first syllable also gives the name's rashi. The name number is calculated separately, from all the letters, and can be compared with the baby's birth number.
Strict and loose matching
English spelling does not always show the sound. Ch, Chh and C, or Sh and S, can point to different syllables. Where a name could fit more than one syllable, the strict reading follows the Devanagari spelling and the loose reading allows common English variants. Families who follow the tradition closely usually go by the strict reading.
ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು
- What is a traditional match?
- The first sound matches the nakshatra pada, the rashi agrees, and the Chaldean name number is not marked challenging against the birth day. It is still tradition, not a promise.
- The name is not in your list. Can I still check it?
- Yes. Confirm one of the Devanagari first sounds. The match uses that sound, and the English spelling for the number.
- What if I only know the rashi?
- Choose the rashi and leave the nakshatra empty. The syllable line will say it was not checked.
